Help and support for your small business

Help and support for your small business

Although many small businesses remain up-beat in a time of economic uncertainty it’s always nice to receive a little help – especially if this allows scope to develop and grow your business.

There are a number of support groups and resources available to the small business owner in the UK today. It’s not always easy to identify which of these groups would be the most useful for your particular business. So I’m going to take a few minutes to talk about what exactly is available and how you can utilise these resources to your advantage.

Business Link
Business Link’s principal aim is to give free useful help and resources to small businesses in a clear, easy-to-understand structure. The Business Link gives detailed advice on the following:

  • Starting up your business
  • Financing your business
  • Taxes
  • Health and Safety
  • Exploiting your ideas
  • I.T and E-Commerce
  • Sales and Marketing
  • International trade and growing your business

In addition to useful help and advice the Business Link also has points to a number of other resources including regional development agencies and their partners in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

British Chambers Of Commerce (BCC)
The BCC work directly with the British government to help shape business affecting policies and provides representation, services, information and guidance to its members. In addition to the BCC there are a number of smaller, localised chambers of commerce that have sprung-up around the UK to give help and advice regarding local policies, events and services to businesses in the region.

Business Growth Clubs
Business growth clubs have been setup by the BCC in conjunction with established, well known market leaders such as Dell and BT. Business growth clubs aim to offer practical business workshops in the following areas:

  • Banking and Finance
  • Sales and Marketing
  • Utilising I.T and modern communications effectively
  • Business growth through exports
  • Expanding your workforce

Business growth clubs are also a useful way to meet other, likeminded, business executives and will give you the opportunity to learn from experts in the field to help develop a successful growth strategy for your business.
