“Mumpreneur” is a term that seems to be cropping up all over the place. The term is basically what it sounds like – a woman who just so happens to be a mother that runs her own business from the comfort of her own home.
So why is this term becoming more prominent at the moment?
Let’s take a look at some of the factors that are influencing increasing numbers of women to turn to starting a small business:
1. The economic recession – probably isn’t number one on the list but it’s certainly not a bad place to start. The recession, like it or not, is taking its toll on the majority of us. With unemployment still on the increase people need to find work and, unfortunately, work is proving harder to find than anyone imagined.
2. The lifestyle. Let’s face facts – many working women trying to juggle family life and their career is an unenviable struggle. So the appeal of working at home is, for many women, the flexibility it offers – they can essentially work their business around their family life – significantly reducing stress levels.
3. Women are striving for a more independent lifestyle. Fewer women want to be solely dependent on their partner to bring in an income, and quite rightly so. Starting a small business based at home helps gives that independence and allows women to depend on their own entrepreneurial instinct.
I have barely scraped the surface of what a mumpreneur is and what they do. It’s worth bearing in mind that there are many other aspects of owning a home-based small business that appeal to both stay-at-home and working mothers alike.
